Overview

The Dowry Calculator was an interactive digital campaign created for Shaadi.com to raise awareness about the harsh reality of dowry practices in India. Designed as a seemingly simple calculator, the experience engaged users through familiar inputs like income, profession, and lifestyle choices—only to reveal a powerful and unexpected truth.

Built in April 2015 using Adobe Flash and ActionScript, the campaign blended storytelling with interactivity to spark curiosity, drive engagement, and provoke thought. What started as a user-driven tool quickly transformed into a social message that resonated widely across audiences.

Challenges

Dowry, despite being illegal, continues to be deeply rooted in societal norms across India. Communicating the seriousness of this issue is challenging—traditional awareness campaigns often fail to engage users emotionally or hold their attention long enough to create impact.

The key challenge was:
    • How do you address a sensitive social issue without sounding preachy or ignorable?
    • How do you make users experience the problem, instead of just reading about it?

The goal was to create something that:
    • Grabs attention instantly
    • Feels personal and relatable
    • Leaves a lasting emotional impact

Execution

We designed an interactive calculator experience that intentionally played with user expectations.

Users were invited to calculate their “dowry value” by selecting personal details such as age, profession, salary, education, and lifestyle assets. The interface closely resembled a real valuation tool—making the experience feel engaging, familiar, and even slightly intriguing.

However, instead of displaying a monetary value, the calculator delivered a powerful twist:

The final number revealed was actually the count of dowry-related deaths reported in India.
This unexpected shift transformed curiosity into awareness—creating a moment of realization that left a lasting emotional impact on the user.

Built using Adobe Flash and ActionScript, the experience was designed for smooth interaction and storytelling. The campaign was hosted on the client platform and promoted across social media like Twitter (Currently X), where it quickly gained traction.

As users engaged with the calculator and shared it online, the campaign began to spread rapidly—turning into a viral conversation starter.
